MA Screenwriting
Liverpool John Moores University's MA in Screenwriting is designed to prepare students for the exacting demands of the film industry.
It is a highly participatory course for committed writers of all ages and is taught by experienced tutors and industry professionals. The emphasis is on the development of practical screenwriting skills and the production of a portfolio of work, which includes a feature length screenplay. The course will take you from initial concept to first and second draft.
You learn the basics of screenplay formatting and how to write selling documents, treatments and step outlines. Various structural techniques are taught and discussed, including "Classic Hollywood Three-Act-Structure", Christopher Vogler's "mythic" approach to story and character function and the Index Card system of story building. You are also be encouraged to look at film in terms of genre and to reflect on your own work in relation to these concerns.
You write and develop several short film scripts and begin to gather ideas for feature-length projects. All screenplays are workshopped in small group situations and you are encouraged to actively engage in the development process of the work of your peers.
You are also encouraged to develop an original voice, pursue challenging and innovative methods of storytelling, engage in programmes of research and development, and view your work in the context of the world marketplace.
The weekly sessions include lectures, screenings, practical exercises, workshops and visiting sessions from writers, producers, directors and actors.
